C.U.B.- Cardiff's Ultimate Burger

Bonnie and Clyde. Jay and Silent Bob.

Morrissey and Marr. Buster and Lucille. Laurel and Hardy.

Avon and Stringer. Sam and Frodo. Han and Chewie.

Brent and Keenan. Mick and Keef. Leon and Matilda.

Liz Lemon and Jack Donaghy.

Roland Rat and that chap with the friendly hand...

History and fiction are full of famous partnerships.

Some set out to achieve fame or notoriety. Power.

Others unite in the pursuit of a shared dream.

A vision.

A hope of a better world.

Sometimes they are bonded by blood: always, they are joined in

Today we add another to this august roll call, as two blogs join forces to find Cardiff's Ultimate Burger.

A quest with a twist. A quist, if you will.

It is not- repeat, NOT- just two blokes wandering the city stuffing their faces.

Oh no.

Certainly not.

And you'd be a fool and a communist to think otherwise. Certainly, to the best of our knowledge, the different species issue won't be a problem.

A couple of weekends ago we were sat in the beer garden of Hereford’s The Barrels. We had just tasted greatness in The Beefy Boys' burgers (twice...).  A few days later, in Las Vegas, they came second in the Burger Category at the World Food Championships). That kind of epiphany doesn't come along very often. Then again, neither do burgers like that. So we decided to finally get on with what we'd been talking about for ages. The answer to the perennial question, 'What's the best burger in town?'

Right, here's how it works... rather than pay one visit, eat one burger and then assume that actually represents everything they offer, we will do this thing properly. After all, you've read those before.

Our team of highly-trained assessors (i.e. him and me) will sample a healthy selection from the various menus, and rate them by their constituent parts. Patty, bread, toppings, you get the picture.

If two heads are better than one, then two stomachs can only be A Good Thing. Ask a cow*.

Sides, drinks, breadth of menu- all of these will play their part, of course.

But it isn't limited to that. We'll be exploring the human side to all this, too: the stories behind your favourite handfuls of food, the people putting in the hours to perfect this classic.

And more than that- what's the ultimate burger you can source locally to make at home? Who's raising the best beef for the best butchers' patties? Who's baking amazing bread? Where's the ideal cheese? Bacon? Locally-made sauces and toppings? How can you combine all these in a burger to make angels weep and gnash their teeth in envy?

OK, you've got the idea.

This will take some time. Our training has been intense, comprehensive, punishing. Challenging, rigorous, arduous.

Lots of others words that mean 'dead hard'.

Onward and upward. The quest begins. Along the way there will be unexpected pleasure and disappointments, triumph and disaster, but you know what old whatsisname said about those two...

Wish us luck. And if you have any suggestions, you know what to do...

*Before it becomes a burger. Obviously.
